You will recall that I was not hopeful of getting logged into my PC until tomorrow. Well, imagine my surprise and delight when they told me it would be today! Sure enough, throughout the day, we have made steady progress towards getting me up and working. It’s not been fast, but one step at a time. The IT helpdesk have been extremely helpful, and have solved loads of problems for me. I can’t help thinking that it would have been easier if they had a little booklet with instructions of “10 things you need to do to get working at Credit Suisse!”
I am ALMOST ready to start work tomorrow – just one more IT tweak I think. My boss is extremely busy in meetings and may not have time to get me started, but will hopefully have some time on Thursday or Friday.
Biggest frustration has been the keyboard on my work PC. Swiss (or maybe all German) keyboards have the Y and Z keys transposed, which is very confusing for a speed typist such as myself. It’s amazing how many words need the letter Y, and how many times I have accidentally typed a Z today. I am sure I will get used to it eventually – except that my laptop is a UK layout, so I may just remain hopelessly confused!
They told me yesterday that our team is moving to a different building next Monday, so there are lots of packing crates around. Nice to have just arrived and to have very little in the way of goods to move – just my PC I guess. The new building is slightly closer to the town centre, so the journey will be slightly easier, assuming that I stay in my current apartment (which is unlikely as it’s quite expensive and quite small!) Nevertheless, I think the journey will be easier and quicker to the new place.
I went to my agency to collect my contract this evening, so I now have to visit the Kloten public office to register for a work permit. I think this will have to be Thursday evening, as they close every other day at 4:30. It’s going to be a rush getting there for 6:30 on Thursday, and I bet they have loads of people queueing on this, their only late night of the week. When I move to a different apartment (presumably in a different part of Zurich) I will have to go and unregister in Kloten and re-register at the new place. No centralised public records here! And each time you have to pay a small fee……!
